A recent capacity tender has already allocated nearly 9,713 MWh to upcoming projects, further reinforcing the country's ambitions in energy storage. Before the commissioning of the Lovech facility, Bulgaria's largest BESS was a 25 MW / 55 MWh system developed by Renalfa IPP in 2024.
Energy Minister Zhecho Stankov hailed the installation as a milestone for Bulgaria's energy independence and regional leadership. “This facility will help maintain the most stable energy system in Southeast Europe,” he said. “We are the pillar of the Balkans in balancing electricity systems.”
The new system also signals the beginning of Bulgaria's national plan to reach 10 GWh of battery storage capacity within the next year. A recent capacity tender has already allocated nearly 9,713 MWh to upcoming projects, further reinforcing the country's ambitions in energy storage.
